Do I need a motorcycle licence to join a tour?
Yes. You need two documents, and both must be valid for motorcycles: A 1968 Vienna Convention International Driving Permit (IDP) with motorcycle validation, and the driving licence from your home country, also with motorcycle validation.
What do the tour levels mean?
Easy: short distances of 100–150 km a day, with a good amount of curves. Medium: longer distances of 200–250 km a day, mostly mountain passes and twisty roads. Hard: long distances of 300+ km a day, over variable terrain and mixed road types, on and off road, with twisty roads.
How experienced do I need to be?
The minimum age to start riding with DME is 25. We strongly recommend at least 3 years of riding experience to ride in Vietnam; this is for your own safety.
Can I bring my own gear, or do you provide it?
Riding gear is each rider’s personal equipment, so we recommend bringing your own. We can also help you buy gear in Vietnam — helmets, gloves, riding pants, jackets, boots and rain gear — in a wide range of prices.
How big are the groups?
Groups start at a minimum of 6 riders, with a maximum of 10 riders.
What happens if the bike breaks down?
If your bike breaks down unexpectedly, please stay calm. On a guided tour, tell your tour guide. On a bike rental or self-guided tour, call the DME office. Either way, we will assist you.
How do I pay, and what deposit do you need?
We accept credit cards and overseas transfers via Wise. For DME tours, we collect a 20% deposit to secure your place in the group. We’ll share the full details when you get in touch with us by email or WhatsApp.
When is the best time of year to ride in Vietnam?
From September through to May of the following year.
Do I need travel insurance?
We recommend buying a travel insurance policy from World Nomads.
